Synopsis:
 
Spartacus and Varro returned to the Ludus victorious after being chained together in the arena and winning against other gladiators . Crixus and Spartacus were then set up to fight an exhibition match in an adulthood birthday for Numerius.

It is here Ilythia - still hot from vengeance to Spartacus - uses her "charms" on Numerius to get Varro to replace Crixus instead, all the while knowing that Varro is like a brother to Spartacus and then instructing Numerius to give the death judgment to the loser.

When Spartacus hesitates to slay Varro, the latter forces Spartacus’s sword down his neck to save Spartacus, with a last request that Spartacus take care of Aurelia and his son. "I would have done the same".

Spartacus Blood and Sand Cast - Batiatus

As owner of a Ludus, a school for gladiators, Batiatus (played by John Hannah) has been seeing financial hard times due to the drought in Capua.

He bought Spartacus when Spartacus survived execution in the arena by four of Solonius's gladiators, hoping to gain friendship from  Legatus Claudius Glaber who had wanted Spartacus dead, and also hoping to be able to weld the raw talent of Spartacus into excellent gladitorial skills.

His wife Lucretia is a true partner emotionally, physically and in craftiness. Despite all the events in life, busyness of the romans in orgies and sexual pleasures, they share a passionate marriage and both desire for a better social status.

Synopsis:

Spartacus is burdened with grief for having Varro his best friend - who treated him as brother - dead under his sword.

Spartacus's grief simply would not tend his wound from the fight with Varro fester, thus weakening him to the point of getting a high fever and making him unable to fight agains Pericles, the Titan of Pompeii, in the Primus.

Crixus, the former champion of Capua was brought back to the Primus - with boos from the crowd - as they were expecting Spartacus, the Champion of Capula.

Batiatus succeeds in employing his revenge against the magistrate for "spitting on him" while he has invited and held a party for the magistrate and his son, Numerius.
It was an act excellently planned and carried out along with Ashur, all the while managing to blame Solonius for the murder of the magistrate.
