Spartacus (played by Andy Whitfield) is a Thracian soldier who volunteered to fight in the Roman army against the enemy of Rome and Thrace. Because of his defiance to Legatus Claudius Glaber, his Roman commander, Spartacus is sentenced to die in the Roman Arena.
Amazingly, Spartacus defies all odds, fights and kills 4 gladiators, and survives. He is then sentenced to slavery, which brings him to be bought by Batiatus. Spartacus is then trained as a gladiator in Batiatus' ludus.
Although Spartacus still has rebelious tendencies, they are tamed with a promise that one day he will be reunited with his beloved wife Sura.
